JP tweeting expecting two or three new signings in the coming week.
And after that unacceptable performance today they can’t come soon enough.

I suspect Josh Martin is one of those.

I can be critical but how was the performance unacceptable? I saw plenty of effort and we were the better team first half, playing some fairly solid football certainly much better than Cambridge whose fans seem to think they can make the play offs. I know after we switched to 4-4-2 we created little and the lack of left back and a proper number ten was evident but to describe the performance as unacceptable is surprising.

No change from 24/25
Poorly organised
Defensively - have they never played together - no
Nothing in midfield
1 up front until chasing the game
reported missing Broom and Bennett
If we have the same coaching staff nothing is going to change
Flynn needs his mate in Downes needs to go to the academy
Vincent not sure

Typical away performance
The big question for me is attacking midfield and 2 strikers at home

Not impressed

Disappointing yes but unacceptable? Really?

It was a scrappy game and looked likely from some way out to be a 0 0 or 1 0 either way. Cambridge got the goal and of the two teams they probably deserved to win if there had to be a winner.

Effort was there. Commitment was there. We will probably win our share of games like that. Doubtless the narrative will be somewhat different in such circumstances.

Seems to me some people need to look beyond the result when making comments....

Im frankly gob smacked by the negativity.
Its first game of season FFS

We were well organised and pretty solid.

We had the better chances.

They went up a gear second half.

Its as if I was watching a different game to everyone else.

All the lads I went with were happy with performance despite the loss.

Plenty positives

First game of the season - where (apart from last season) we're usually terrible. The test of whether the team has improved or not will be against Bromley/Barnet at the end of the month. The types of games that we were bullied in last season. Our main creative outlets (Archer and JT) will be doubled-up on and they've got to find ways of making it work, but both are young and have time to work it out. Is the defence an upgrade from last year - definitely more experience - but will it leak fewer than 70 goals?

4-2-3-1 puts a lot of pressure on the CM to tackle, press and get up to support the lone striker - and time will tell if Broom is the best player for this, or Backwell/Pell suit the position better. Once Pell is fit, his leadership and presence in both boxes will make us stronger (tbh we've been waiting for this for two season). From last season, we've lost Dulson, Taylor and Bowman, so we need the strikers that we've got (Bickerstaff, Angol, Miller) to start firing pretty soon. One up front will be OK away from home, let's see if Flynn does the same against MK Franchise and Chesterfield.

^^^^ This is exactly how I saw it, a close game which either could have won. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either, I saw some absolute shockers last season that was not comparable and seem a pretty par for the course league two game. Both teams committed and organised but both lacking some real creative spark.

...and me. Archer and Kins had good games; Cundy and Broom...not so good. To describe that performance as "unacceptable" shows an unrealistic expectation of what we can achieve, this season. The Rangers fans booed their team after their 1-1 draw with Motherwell because they historically believe they should be challenging for the title. For anyone to do the same to Cheltenham Town (even if it's from their armchair) after a match that clearly and demonstrably did not lack effort, is outrageous.

I agree it wasn't unacceptable if you want context for what I would deem as that see Morecambe and Tranmere away last season.... it wasn't that bad.

It was just a performance lacking creativity and quality. What worries me is the way we tend to set up and tactics dictates we see a lot of performances like this and I didn't see much difference or progress from last season. Also it is 1 match in, its pointless really drawing conclusions to where we are at until at least 10 matches in.

Re Archer and Thomas being doubled up on - other players have got to step up and make the most of the gaps this provides. They'll either have to stop doubling up on the wingers or be exploited elsewhere. We can't have our two wingers as the only threat.

Honestly, I'm sick of having one up front. It only works IF the wingers are free. We are still pumping it long to Miller who wins 10% of them at most. Not his fault, as it still isn't his game. He gives it all and is provided with sod all in return. His one chance yesterday came from a quite lucky clearance that ran for him. 4-1-3-2/4-2-2-2 is the only way forward, unless we get a big lump of a centre forward and an actual good no.10 in, afaic.

Do we need another winger who doesn't score too many?

I only caught the second half yesterday (had enough of sport after the rugby in the morning). Have to say, in the second half we looked bang average at best. Yes we ran around a lot, but nor sure that is the aim of the game?
