Has anyone seen anything like this before?
Whitley Bay have goals with with wheels on like many low league clubs. The wheel was folded back beside the goal (see below for example). Approaching 90 mins in an FA Cup extra-preliminary round replay Whitley Bay 'score' against Bridlington Town.
A great shot from the angle goes in at the far post, strikes the wheel and bounces straight out - by which time half the Whitley Bay team are celebrating. As it dawns the ref hasn't given it Bridlington break away and score amongst the confusion.
During the aftermath of complaints the Bridlington keeper even kicks a wheel whilst talking to the home fans behind the goal. The ref then consults the linesman who seems to suggest it was a goal, but the ref does not change his mind.
Whitley Bay still had time to see a header off the bar and bounce on to the line and away in injury time, however the damage was already done.
Dreadful decision.

And don't forget when we played VS Rugby about 20 years ago at Whaddon Road, and Neil Smith played on after they hit the stanchion inside the goal, and the ref didn't realise it had gone in !
We won 1-0, and Lindsay Parsons would not comment after the match !

When we played Northampton about 10-12 years ago, didn't they score a legitimate goal that wasn't given? It went in so hard it smacked off the wall at the front of the old away end and bounced out. Cobblers players were chasing the ref round the pitch for about 3 or 4 minutes.

Well well well, Bridlington now through another round and face Northern League side Newcastle Benfield in the First Qualifying Round, a game they should win, with the 'Giants' of the Southern, Northern Premier, and Isthmian awaiting in Round 2.
Amazing the financial implications of the referee howler. I could have seen Whitley Bay face Cirencester, Hereford or FC United of Manchester, but instead Bridlington could get the glory.
It won't in this case, but such referee failures could literally cause the bankruptcy and death of a club.

They will certainly be drafted in to WR if we are top of the League for longer than the FL would like I am sure.Malabus wrote:Expect the officials to be appointed to L2 within 12 months.
