An example of when a new stand development goes wrong. Poor timing for them with the stand coinciding with relegation. They never recovered.

Apparently the guy that's just ditched them has been on about a new stadium since he took over! Madness. No wonder they/he are in the s#!t if that was his focus when they had a perfectly decent ground with a new-ish stand in non-league.

Plainmoor which like us is council owned, stands on a smaller plot than Whaddon Road and like many clubs needs non match income to boost income.
Thus his vision for a new stadium to bring that about.
On a rumoured 75k pa Gary was always going to be an early departure.

Been following the news on Torquay Utd for a while and GJ was not popular down there at all. Didn’t see it coming this bad though.
It’s always been a struggle down there. Remember when they kicked off at 19.45 on a Saturday night 40 odd years ago. It’s a perennial small club like ours that who will forever find it a struggle.
Brilliant book by an ex player Garry Nelson who told what it was like down at Torquay back in the day. Well worth a read.

financing of lower league football clubs doesn't need an overhaul it just needs a sensible approach to live within your means, always has done.

Spivs will always be attracted to football clubs due to the unique way money can be "administered" within them. Although fit and proper tests does need some attention once an owner has passed the test there's nothing that can be done if the owner has a 'change of heart' and wants to use the club as dustbin.

What also doesn't help is monied lower league clubs paying huge wages for players to play non league, and league's 1/2 which then ramps up the salaries for players in those leagues.

That stand has a long and interesting history. The original wooden stand was brought over from Buckfastleigh racecourse in the 1920s where there were two identical main stands. If you’re ever driving down the A38 past Newton Abbot, you can see its twin marooned in the middle of a field where the racecourse used to be. The dual carriageway now runs along part of the old course. It’s quite an eerie sight.

Half of that wooden stand burned down in the 80s in mysterious circumstances the week after the Bradford Disaster. It was left partially intact with a much reduced capacity. The changing rooms and club offices were all lost. It was eventually replaced by the new, pretty impressive, stand in 2011 funded by lottery winner Paul Bristow. It’s precisely the sort of stand we could do with (minus the financial crisis).

Torquay needs saving. Good (proper) ground in the suburbs. Why did the fan-based ownership sell-up?
