Did they? Or do you mean once they joined and performed people did? There was not much to say Taylor would be better or worse, than say, Shaughnessy, when he first joined.

Yes, there was a lot of hype around them and Aaron Ramsey when they joined us.

Taylor came with huge praise from the Baggies fans, with a large number saying he should be in their first team squad. I don't recall much outside noise from pundits though. Same with Josh Griffiths.

Butland on the other hand was very much the rising star of goalkeeping and massive things were expected of him.

Could have missed out on this one, says league one interest.

I'm not sure hype is the right word. Caleb was described as "promising" when he signed. For comparison, Taylor Perry was described as "highly rated" when he joined from Wolves and Aaron Ramsey as "highly-regarded".

This is just standard terminology for Premier League academy players, isn't it?

I’d love to see the reaction if it was announced we were signing an “unpromising player with few prospects”.

As our squad seems paper thin, I think we would be grateful for anybody that signs!

Dammit I thought this new comment was going to be a rumour!

I fear we're playing a waiting game to see how things pan out as the window draws to a close. That or we've enquired after a few loan prospects and the parent clubs are biding their time for better offers...

Perhaps the management team aren't worried until after Pompey cos they think we'll lose the next two either way so no need to rush. (Said with tongue in cheek... sort of)

Amen to this, you could argue Davies was at fault for all three of our goals on Saturday. Hoping we don't see him tonight, Wade might bench him under the pretence that he can't do Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday.

I'd like to see: a Caleb Taylor type, a Callum Wright type, a striker with pace, and a right-sided Will Ferry. Probably need another centre mid in there too... someone brave on the ball who can retain possession and calm things down a bit and play in tight spaces - there are loads of players like that wanting a League 1 relegation battle, right?

Not sure if Matt Baker as previously rumoured fits the bill but would make sense as he can supposedly cover defensive mid which would help relieve the pressure off Thompson

He has just left Countryfile, but I think he is heading to the US to make another show unfortunately.

What is your point? Nobody is paying £200k for anyone in that list above - they're free agents. And Connor Wickham is the same age.

Wouldn't mind Troy Deeney. Well, I would mind a lot as he's a bell and would want too much, but a Troy Deeney type.
Most on that list wouldn't fit the Cheltenham way. Too Billy Big balls for us. Wouldn't fit.

Pretty sure John Ward tried to sign Frazier Campbell on loan when he was a young up and coming star. Think he chose Hull instead.

I'll tell you who is a handful striker. I went to the preseason game at Newport County and was impressed with their lad up front called Will Evans. A real handful he was. Just checked how he is doing. 3 goals already and joint top scorer in Lg2.
No doubt to late on that one. One to watch.

Certainly is too late I would say. Once a striker is scoring in L2 we can no longer compete in either transfer or wages.

Same with Eisa and Cole Stockton. As much as I was on about rescuing them from L2 over the summer, in reality there’s 23 L1 clubs and about 10 L2 clubs (and probably a couple of NL ones) who can pay better money than we can.

It's not a striker we need (though bodies would be nice) but a creative midfielder, and someone with a bit of pace.

I've heard a few names in the last few days and they seem quite exciting - whether we can nail them down or not though is a different matter.

Agree that a CAM to play behind the forwards needs to be no. 1 priority. But we do need another forward in aswell as current options off the bench have no impact.

Loans or permanent Si? I've heard one name and presuming it could be permanent wondering if it could be same person.

Probably need two forwards, attacking midfielder, centre half and right wing back.

Loans - which is what is causing the hold up. We're waiting on the clubs to give the green light.

Can add Steven Fletcher to that list (and also the 'probably too rich for us' list too!). I see he is being linked with Fleetwood currently but is just the type of experienced target man we could do with as an option. Maybe Liam Smith could have a word as they were both at Dundee Utd last year?!
