Listened to this in the gym and got a few strange looks shouting “It’s Matty Taylor…..no, not Ryan Bowman, Matty bloody Taylor…”

Thank you for the opportunity to stretch the vocal cords!

BTW, the pod has been absolutely brilliant this year. Essential listening in difficult (and positive) times. Thank you for your efforts. Happy Christmas.

A couple of Christmases ago, after too many mince pies, I did put together my worst FL Cheltenham team. If I do it again, there's no doubt Lee Angol comes straight into the starting XI. Probably bumps Mathieu Manset to the bench.

Great year with the pod by the way!

The worse the world gets, the more I seek refuge in pointless trivia like the last Cheltenham squad to not feature a loan player. Thanks for mentioning that FA Cup tie at Tamworth in 2013. Squad that day:

Starting: Scott Brown, Keith Lowe, Jason Taylor, Troy Brown, Jamie Cureton, Sam Deering, Byron Harrison, Terry Gornell, Matt Richards, Russell Penn, Craig Braham-Barrett
Subs: Connor Roberts, Steve Elliott. Joe Hanks, Zack Kotwica, Sido Jombati, Ashley Vincent, Harry Williams

David Noble was a regular at the time whilst on loan from Rotherham and presumably sat this one out for cup-tie reasons. He started the game before and after.

I make it a run of 648 first team games between this and Oldham last week.

Great podcast and interesting.

No rubbish or nonsense - just knowledgeable conversation on the football club we all love.

The pod was nominated for an recognition award recently, didn't know who the final winners were.

Keep up the great work.

The winners were Gills In The Blood - a Gillingham fans podcast. Tbf, they appear to be very good and professionally run.

Thanks for the comments though Mal. Have a feeling tonight's recording could be a long one.

On the FFP discussion, Si, you rightly said we don’t have FFP in L2. We have the Salary Cap Management Protocol (SCMP) which effectively limits spending on wages to a % of turnover.

In answer to your question about how clubs like MK get round it, it’s because “cash injections” are counted as turnover. So, if you have a sugar daddy they can pump as much money as they like in to cover wages.

Sustainable it is not and it needs fixing as more and more money is swilling around the lower divisions of the EFL.

Agree Jerry. Clubs with 3,000 gates paying players £250,000 a year does seem rather excessive and non sustainable.
I’d rather see more money being pumped into infrastructure, facilities and the community for the benefit of all.

A couple of clarifications:

Its called the Salary Cost Management Protocol

100% of cash injections by owners can be counted towards the income (not turnover) figure. The only restriction is that these must be gifts and not loans (even share buying loans). Which is sensible as loans are debt burdens on clubs.

The "cap" on wages is 50% of income in League Two.

We're benefitting from this. Presumably, Mike Garlick is making cash injections to pay higher wages for players that we previously couldn't afford. Our income, presumably, hasn't risen since pre-Garlick so that must be what's happening. Future accounts will confirm that. tThe reassuring thing for us is that Garlick is doing this to a modest extent. Clubs like MK clearly aren't restraining themselves, which is when the playing field becomes unfair.
