We went to 4-4-2 for the final thirty minutes today and I felt that's when we looked our most clueless and had the least threat about us. It's ok to have it in the locker but I would be worried if we tried to play like that more often because it wasn't very well coached.HamTown wrote: ↑02 Aug 2025, 18:09 Bit of a whimper of a start to the season.
Expecting us to go to 442 next game and longer term 352
Wing backs of Aoioki(sp?) and AJB and 3 of the 4 CBs with Kins and Young in front would look very strong
All dependant on us actually being able to cross and hit a good set piece![]()

It wasn’t as bad as some are making out
But it really wasn’t good. Keep the ball on the ground, play to each others strengths ffs.
Thomas couldn’t be arsed. Archer was poor. Miller was the only one driving us forward and had little support. Kinsella the only player who deserves any praise. Needs to improve next week but I have faith that it will.

Didn't we play 442 to good effect last season before Young got his injury?Robin wrote: ↑02 Aug 2025, 20:43We went to 4-4-2 for the final thirty minutes today and I felt that's when we looked our most clueless and had the least threat about us. Thought Thomas would have been better coming off the bench if not up to speed
Not long in from the game...traffic was a nightmare!!!
Good analysis Robin. I thought we had good shape and pretty much matched them.
Archer was very good especially tracking back. JT quite...they seemed to be targeting left.
Patterns of play i thought we were more fluid against swansea and BC.
We need a striker. I like miller but hes not a lone striker.
Shite ref but were used to that.
Power also caught the eye today

Nothing new, nothing fresh,a few new players the same long ball nonsense to a player who isn't suited to it.
Even if george won a header or held the ball up who was who flicking it on to or laying off to?,his team mates were a good 15/20 yards away.
Every challenge miller went up for and lost the second ball was picked up by a Cambridge player, not a ctfc player near them.....it kept happening over and over again.
Seen archer getting some negativity (what's new?) The guy was more at left back helping out Anderson for most of the first half,he covered alot of ground and then second half doubled up on.
It'll take time to settle down and get things how the manager wants due to late signings and with a few more coming in this week it won't be settled for a while.
Over all i was pretty disappointed by our performance as i said above no new or fresh ideas, the exact type of performance of last season just with a few new faces, the same play, ideas recycled over and over.

Very familiar away performance to last season in my opinion. It was lump it up to Miller who was left isolated and hope we pick up on a loose ball. We still have no natural attacking midfielder as shown by Broom struggling in that role. We know he needs to play as wing back or winger to be seen to best effect.
We seem to be stacked with central midfielders but none who are capable of playing the role Colwill did last season. Maybe we can find another loan player like Wright or Colwill to play the role as without one we won't be doing much this season in my opinion.

I thought Young and Kinsella were decent yesterday and along with Archer probably our best players but neither are going to play a good ball through the lines that is not their game. Broom picks up pockets of space but he's not really going to score a lot either and needed to be closer to Miller, I also don't think he was bad as some are making out. Definitely need someone who can make the runs from deep and get close to the striker like Colwill used too.
Also regarding Darrah Power I thought he had a decent game and made a cracking save off the line after a terrible mistake almost played Cambridge in. However he's no left back and was lost when we switched him over.

I think this season will be similar to the last in terms of fans perception.
Fans that don't really like Flynn and think we have a God given right to produce Brazil style football with one of the lowest budgets.
And those that appreciated its a bit more difficult to rebuild a squad and back room on a shoe string . Then also produce a recognised style of play with the talent at the managers disposal.
Last two games preseason the link up play was decent.
Yes yesterday a couple of times players went long.....with no one on the end.
It was first game of the season. Flynn doesn't coach hoof ball

I thought we started well but Cambridge Utd blotted out our wide men and it was deja vu with poor old George playing the billy no mates position. Power and Cundy looked dodgy and I suspect Wilson and Arkell will start on Saturday . I will wait until the window closes and the squad settles before worrying. Hopefully a brighter performance on Saturday will get us going.

I never assess the team on the basis of pre-season, and I certainly won't on the first game. In fact, I prefer to wait until the end of the transfer window and even then you need a few games to see how the squad settles before the January window opens which could again change the team dynamics and, of course, coming into Easter provides a real test of stamina and fitness. So, you'll really want to wait until the last game of the season.
Completely agree, even if you had the same starting XI from the previous season I wouldn't be overly fussed if we lost the first game, considering the length of the season and the complete lottery of this league as long as you come through it injury free lets just move onto the next game.TheTownClub wrote: ↑05 Aug 2025, 09:27 I never assess the team on the basis of pre-season, and I certainly won't on the first game. The meltdown on some social media (after Saturday) is border line mental health issues.
