From the safety of an armchair perspective thought overall a decent 3 points. Archer though flatters to deceive; runs into trouble and too many players all too often. Selfish, attempting a wild shot when a quicker slicker pass may have brought a better result. Too slow to trigger a shot up front; defence worrying. Too many lucky clearances; but hoofing out of trouble obviously the way to go! Though the ref was very fair....the lino giving a corner when a straight goal kick..less so.
I enjoyed that, not the best team we will ever play, but we have lost to worse. Agree about Archer, if there is a blind alley somewhere, he will find it.
Like hutchinson (sp ?), he looks like he can spot a player and make a pass. Shock of all shocks, his passes reach the target. Will it ever catch on???
Will be a much deserved happier MF this evening

A job done, and at least 11 more of those please. A good start was needed, and was made but instead of going on to win comfortably it was hanging on. Better, but not a recovery.
Not convinvced at all about Bickerstaff, half the player Miller is from what I've seen. Miller is like a wasp buzzing arouind up top but we need more pace and a finisher neither of those seem to be Bickerstaff.
the problem is, his second touch is more often than not a tackle. I am hoping the new guy will provide a bit of competition. Sgt Angle is improving, but still not sure about him. However his defending from set pieces is welcomed
Archer holds on for it 3, 4, 5 touched too many almost every time. Lack of confidence, in himself and maybe teammates.
Miller...he might keep running around but he never wins anything. Purely hopes the defenders will make a mistake he can capitalize on, which I don't think has happened yet. If he gets the ball in a decent position he has very little end product unless he's within 10 yards of the goal.

Lots of positives today...including the ref.
Result was more important than the performance but it was evident most have stepped up a gear.
Archer very frustrating time and time again not playing it quick enough.
Hutch gave him a peice of his mind a few times...which will help. He now has better players around him.
Flynn will have some selection descions soon for first time in a while.
Only negative for me was the 'Johnson out' singing.
I've got no problem with a few chants but I would prefer to get behind the team personally...as im.sure the team would prefer.

I can never understand the Gloucestershire / english accent, so they could have been singing anything as far as I am concerened. (yes a problem living in cheltenham)Garby74 wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025, 17:17 Lots of positives today...including the ref.

I thought it was two poor teams but overall we probably did enough to deserve the win. At this stage however it doesn't matter how the points come we just needed that win.
I thought Sherring and Bennett were the pick of the players and Hutchinson deserves credit for the standout piece of quality which ultimately was the difference.

Thought we played well against a poor Stanley side. The only negative was our profligacy in front of goal. Stanley were knocking on the door, without really threatening too much, in the last 20 and we were only a fluke or a deflection away from another last minute heartbreak.
Angol and Miller were excellent. AT LAST we had a link between midfield and attack with Hutchinson filling the gaping chasm that's been there since Colwill left. I'd love to see comparative stats for aimless diagonals today compared to earlier in the season. Felt like there were bloody hundreds in previous games, barely any today.
All in all, good. BUT we won't play many worse sides that Accrington, so we must temper the optimism. Flynn nailed it - one swallow doesn't make a summer.

If we're naming all the players, Kinsella was excellent in his usual scrapping role, winning his midfield battles and one or two others as well.
Re the chanting, we went 1-0 up after 1 minute and 7 seconds, and by 2 minutes Block 1 were chanting Johnson Out...just a few minutes of songs supporting the team after taking the lead at home for the first this season would have been nice.

Would agree with Kinsella, hes been brilliant.
That said Young is so deep sometimes, literally amongst the defenders, it makes me wonder whether someone like Backwell playing instead would push us up the pitch more as do we need 2 midfielders screening the defence?

Must have ruined block 1’s day when we went in front.
I feel people are overlooking that it was one moment of quality which one us that game and whilst for the rest of it we were the better team how many meaningful saves did their keeper make? Perhaps 2 or 3 at best. They were also missing their main defender Rawson.
Accrington had no bite but they had patterns of play and you could see what they were trying to do when playing triangles and lay offs for runners. On the other hand we lack fluidity and still favour a long ball or a set piece as our hope of creating something. There is a lot of work still to do.

I watched it on Sky + and thought we had some really good play, just not the end result. We were passing it around, spreading the ball and playing around them like we had confidence.Robin wrote:I feel people are overlooking that it was one moment of quality which one us that game and whilst for the rest of it we were the better team how many meaningful saves did their keeper make? Accrington, like us, are putting up a fight. Both defences worked hard to shut out threats, so it was good news Cheltenham’s defence kept a clean sheet, which they deserved. Hutchinson’s goal was sheer quality and Bristol Rovers’ (temporary?) loss is our gain.
I can see signs of improvement, it’s not going to be instant glory and we have to accept that the number of new players will take a few games to gel. There is genuine quality in the ranks now.

Hutchinson isn't ever going back to Bristol Rovers, that's pretty clear.Lord Elpuz wrote: ↑07 Sep 2025, 09:37 Accrington, like us, are putting up a fight.
