to be appointed manager of our rivals Bristol City at 11am
Just wondered what you guys thought of him? Doesn't seem a bad appointment from the outside. Just wanted a brief summary of your opinions/what style of football?

He's a God in these parts and rightly so.
He's not liked much elsewhere from what I can see.
As for his football, strong defence and a lot of long ball (Cotterball I believe they call it in Burnley or Portsmouth). It's the team spirit he builds and getting players to play above themselves that is his real strength.

Took us to league 1 from non league.
Won L2 with Notts County
Kept Pompey in Championship with no money
Kept Forest in championship when in a bad position
Solid at Burnley built most of the side that Coyle had when they got promoted to the prem.

Bristol City fans are not that happy.......

Rather than select a thread you can see across most threads there is not much positivity towards him....
Though this one made me laugh

Will be very interesting to see what happens with Marlon. I work with a couple of City fans who really like him as a player. Wonder if Cotts will think he is good enough for L1?

Cotterill himself did the same when he went up to be ass man at Stoke.Nesty wrote:Unlikely. Why would MY go from manager in L2 to assistant a division higher?horlickfanclub wrote:hopefully he will appoint his old mate Yates as number 2. do us all a favour.
Amazing how well Downing has done as number two since being sacked.
I'd agree with that. His style of football can be very effective in League 2, and there's no doubt that he can get people playing for him. He'll do a good job this year by getting everybody working hard, but I think he'll struggle once it comes to building his own team, as he only knows how to play one way.Malabus wrote:Proved himself as a L2 manager. At a higher level average to poor.
Best manager we've ever had by far, though.

Best manager we have ever had no others have come any where near.If he hadn't of been here Baker would probably not have put himself forward to be Chairman. He knew we had a gem and he backed him if Hayward had remained we would still be playing non league football as he or the other directors never had the money to take us to the next level.Good luck to Steve hope he turns it around at Bristol City and proves the doubters wrong.

FAO Bristol City fans:
Since I can't post on your forum without paying (fair enough, keeps the trolls off from other teams) I'd thought I'd share my balanced views on Cotters. It appears that he hasn't adapted his management style much from his days here - so you can expect something like "It's my way or the highway" in terms of his philosophy. Which is OK if you are Sir Alex Ferguson, otherwise an ability to adapt to players and formations is a plus point which Sir Steve is definitely lacking. That said, if he has a group of trusted players at City and gets off to a good start he will get the team sweating blood and tears for him. He was brilliant at motivating the team here, even if that did involve a lot of shouting and swearing at the players. Rarely did we see back to back bad performances here under his tenure. He knows how to get teams across the finish line, and I have no doubt whatsoever that you will start climbing the table soon.
He may alienate some fans and players along the way, and his management record since leaving us has been patchy to say the least, but looking at your league position I'd say you are in need of someone who will fight for the manager and their shirt. You have plenty of time to get out of danger and I certainly think that Cotterill will help you climb the league in the short term. After that - who knows?!
